New York, NYAlta, a groundbreaking fashion technology startup, has raised $11 million in seed funding to develop its AI-powered digital stylist app—bringing the famous ‘Clueless’ movie closet to life. The round was led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Benchstrength, Algaé Ventures (backed by the Arnault family of LVMH), and Phenomenal Ventures.Founded by Jenny Wang, a Harvard-trained engineer, Alta’s app allows users to digitize their real wardrobes by uploading images or email receipts. It then uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to suggest outfits based on the user’s style, weather, calendar events, and more.

AI-Powered Styling Inspired by Pop Culture

Alta is inspired by the iconic scene in the 1995 film Clueless, where Cher selects her outfit from a virtual closet. Unlike basic outfit generators, Alta creates a personalized avatar and combines users’ existing clothes with shop-ready recommendations, making fashion decisions seamless and fun.

Backed by Fashion and Tech Powerhouses

The funding round attracted a stellar list of angel investors, including:

  • Tony Xu – CEO of DoorDash
  • Karlie Kloss & Jasmine Tookes – Supermodels and entrepreneurs
  • Jenny Fleiss – Co-founder of Rent the Runway
  • Manish Chandra – CEO of Poshmark
  • Meredith Koop – Celebrity stylist known for styling Michelle Obama

Meredith Koop also helped train Alta’s AI on real-world styling and wearability.

Alta’s Vision: Democratizing Personal Styling

“We want Alta to be your everyday style assistant,” said CEO Jenny Wang. “From packing for a trip to planning outfits for big events, Alta uses AI to help people feel confident and creative every day.”

The app includes smart features like cost-per-wear tracking, closet organization, calendar syncing, and sustainability tips—all designed to reduce decision fatigue and maximize wardrobe value.

What’s Next for Alta

Alta plans to expand its engineering and fashion-tech teams, grow its partnerships with retailers and designers, and explore augmented reality (AR) integrations. The startup recently moved its HQ from San Francisco to New York to tap into the city’s AI and fashion talent ecosystem.
